Hi there!
A little about myself…
I’m Horiyama (彫山), a Japanese tattoo artist based in Auckland, New Zealand.
I was born and raised in Hiroshima, Fukuyama. Growing up, I was always surrounded by Japanese art, as my grandparents were passionate Kutani pottery collectors. My family later moved to New Zealand during my early teenage years.
My work is rooted in the traditions of irezumi, combining strong composition, meaningful subject matter, and background (mikiri) designed to flow naturally with the body.
My work is bright, bold, and built to last—carrying the long traditions of tattooing from my country of birth. I have been tattooing for over 8 years, and feel grateful to create work that connects my Japanese heritage with the people I tattoo here in New Zealand.
If you are considering a Japanese tattoo, please feel free to get in touch through the contact form. I will be happy to offer you my knowledge and advice regarding your next project!

Koi and Lotus Tattoo Painting by Horiyama
Why do I call myself Horiyama?
‘Hori’ in Japanese translates as “to carve”. A Japanese tattooer will add the first two syllables of their last name to Hori which gives them their artists name. This title is given to them by their master/teacher once the artist has completed their apprenticeship. The term ‘Hori’ has been used for centuries by Ukiyo-e artitsts in the edo period.
